Chapter 1696: Chapter 1695: Taking You to the Front Line

Qiao Xiaomai was not the least bit polite with Bei Yun. She picked a few rooms nearest to her courtyard to store the gold and silver. Over the next few days, even though the maids helped with some of the chores and all she had to do was focus on cooking, she was still as busy as a spinning top. Even Bei Yun had to go to the kitchen if he wanted to see her.

On this particular day, the day before Bei Yun was set to depart, he once again appeared at the doorway of Qiao Xiaomai’s courtyard kitchen. Glancing at the maids standing outside the courtyard, he clicked his tongue and said, “Now the people of Longshi Country have completely realized your worth.”

“Even after I leave, considering your immense value, they probably won’t dare do anything to you, right?”

“Nonsense! No one else has your kind of decency.” Qiao Xiaomai, who was flipping Braised Pork in the wok, turned her head at his words and glared at him.

“Decency?” Bei Yun sounded as if he’d just heard the most absurd joke in the world. He wanted to laugh, but remembering the poison in his body, he had to stifle it. Pointing to his own nose, he asked, “Me? Decent?”

“Yes, with ’beastly’ trailing right behind,” Qiao Xiaomai added.

This time, Bei Yun could no longer hold back. He let out a hearty laugh, though it only lasted for a few beats. After laughing briefly, his expression turned blank. Raising a hand, he rubbed his face, trying to suppress the overwhelming joy, and said, “Thanks for the compliment.”

“You’re the pick of the litter among the beasts. At least you still have some trace of humanity on you,” Qiao Xiaomai snorted twice.

“I’ll just pretend you’re praising me,” Bei Yun said, raising his hand to rub his face again as if trying to steady himself.

Clearing his throat with a couple of coughs, he spoke again, “If you’re really planning to go tomorrow, then I’ll take you myself.”

“Really?!” Upon hearing this, Qiao Xiaomai immediately spun around excitedly.

“Of course,” Bei Yun nodded.

“Aren’t you afraid I’ll run away?” Qiao Xiaomai’s eyes widened.

“Afraid. But I haven’t treated you badly. Even if Aunt Lingsu really blames me, she wouldn’t actually do anything drastic to me,” Bei Yun replied, his face lighting up with a hint of anticipation. “Wouldn’t you agree?”

Qiao Xiaomai pointed her finger at him and said, “Just so you know, I’m going to tattle on you to Lingsu when I see her.”

Bei Yun smiled faintly at her words. “Don’t always dwell on my beastly side. I do have a genteel side, too.”

Qiao Xiaomai curled her lips and was about to retort, but Bei Yun interrupted her, “Since I’m taking you to the frontlines, make me a few dishes today.”

“I won’t poison you to death, don’t worry!” Qiao Xiaomai rolled her eyes multiple times.

“I want Braised Pork, Coconut Stewed Chicken, and two bowls of white rice. Don’t forget. I’m heading back to work on the herbal remedies,” Bei Yun said as he turned to leave for his apothecary.

Qiao Xiaomai spat toward his retreating figure, but as soon as the Braised Pork was done, she immediately began preparing the two dishes Bei Yun had requested.

Just two dishes. Easy enough. She even planned to add a dessert to make Bei Yun completely satisfied so he wouldn’t go back on his word.

After making the dishes for Bei Yun, she kept busy until the evening. Since she was heading to the frontlines tomorrow, she pushed all the remaining orders aside. But as for the silver she had already collected? She wasn’t giving that back. After all, Longshi Country was small, with a total land area only equivalent to two provinces of Daqi. Even at the frontlines, she could still have snacks delivered to Fen City via fast horses.

What’s more, this time the king of Longshi Country was preparing to personally lead the troops into battle. Once at the frontlines, she could continue cooking for the king.

She had to set out early the next morning. Working late into the night, she ordered people to load the gold and silver she had earned over the past few days onto carts. As she gazed at the piles of gold and silver, she suddenly felt a pang of reluctance to leave.
