There will be some who will try to kill them because of this basic assessment. But they will be weaklings since strong godclads won’t risk their lives for just 200 gold coins.
But if they buy 1,100 gold coins worth of energy waters, they will surely attract dangerous attention to themselves.
It is not that their current identity as a godclad is not enough to put them in danger. But the identity of a very rich godclad will surely put them in more danger. Stronger godclads will be more willing to come after them with the kind of wealth that they have shown.
Because of the high cost of energy, waters alone, being a godclad, is already dangerous. Any more than that and they risk death. That’s the life of a godclad. One wrong move and they are damned.
So if they want more energy waters without drawing too much attention to themselves, they have to get it somewhere else. They have to either wait for the monthly distribution of 1 liter from the lamp bearers or gain control of a spirit spring for themselves.
At this point, it isn’t about the money anymore. They can’t buy the energy water openly, or it will bring more trouble. This frustrated them to no end.
This frustration made them willing to do something drastic to gain energy waters. Many feasible solutions flashed through their minds as they returned home.
The problem of energy waters is a serious matter. It might not be serious if they had a god in their pathways. They could do things for the god in exchange for energy waters.
It is called merits. Sometimes, the use of merit to exchange for progress and power can be voluntary. But sometimes it can be involuntary.
Sometimes, some true gods actively prevent the godclads in their pathway from growing stronger naturally. Any godclad that wants to become stronger must have merit. That means they must work for their god.
The pathway of machinery is an example of a forced need for merits. Machinists must work for their gods, or they invent something that will increase the paper and influence of their gods.
For machinists, they don’t need energy water to grow stronger. The best they can use energy water for is to replenish their spiritual energy. So lack of energy water is not a major problem for them. Of course, in exchange, they have the problem of needing to please their gods.
Every godclad has one or two problems standing in their way of progress. For them, it is energy waters.
The easiest solution is to depend on the public distribution of energy waters. But if they rely on 1 liter of energy water per month to make progress, they will need 100 months of it, or 8 years and 4 months, before they can reach rank 2.
In those 8 years and 4 months, they won’t have energy water needed to make fire, light their house, or heat their house. Not that they need to care about light and heat now as godclads. But they still need to eat.
The long time and the need to eat make this an unviable plan. So they have to find a way to buy energy water in secret, steal it, or gain a lot of it without drawing attention to themselves.
For now, they are hoping to buy energy water in secret. They would rather solve a problem with money if they can. Unfortunately, they don’t have much hope for that because secrecy and quality rarely go hand in hand.
Black markets where people can buy and sell things anonymously seldom have energy water to sell. Even if they do, it is most likely bait by someone fishing for a gullible godclad.
Their best bet is to have an arrangement with the lamp bearers or the vault of gold. If they can reach an agreement with the vault of gold to buy the energy water in a secret location where they won’t be seen by a crowd of people purchasing and carrying out a lot of energy waters from their building, things will be great.
But they prefer the lamp bearers more because the lamp bearers are supposed to be more trustworthy. Lamp bearers also won’t ask for a premium for selling him the energy water in secret like the merchants of the vault of gold will.
After making up their minds, Legion-1 said to the others, “It seems we have to report for duty as soon as possible. I wonder if they have a limit on the amount of energy water that we can exchange as serving lamp bearers.”
Legion-11 added, “It will be best if they let us guard the spirit spring. That way we won’t have to worry about any limit.”
Legion-6 snickered and said, “It is unlikely for that to happen since we are just rank 1. We are too weak to protect something so important. Even if it does happen and they let us guard the spirit spring, it is going to be very difficult to take advantage of the situation on account of our weak strength.”
Legion-12 shrugged and said, “Nothing great is built in a day. Let us get assigned there first. We will take things from there one step at a time.”
Legion-3 agreed. “It is easier for us to steal the energy water if we are on the inside than to infiltrate the security from outside.”
They didn’t return home directly. They walked around the city trying to see if someone was following them.
This is a cautious action that has become second nature to them after experiencing many deaths.
They already know that being a godclad can attract people to kill them. It doesn’t take much intelligence to deduce that if someone is to kill them because of their recent purchase of a large amount of energy water, such a person might have been outside the vault watching people going and coming.
Such a person might also follow them after sensing the power they have or sensing the large amount of energy water that they are carrying. No matter what they do in this situation, they shouldn’t lead this person to where they lay their head.
