Jiang Yan looked at the people who kept asking him when he was going to bring back a new stock of oyster sauces. Earlier, when he was given the responsibility to work at the sauce section in the mall, everyone in his family laughed and disdained him. They all thought that Yu Dong did not think much of him which was why she gave him a small stall that only sold a few bottles of meat and oyster sauces.
After all, who would buy sauces? What was so good about them? Thus, not only was he scolded by his wife but the extra sauces that he brought back home, in case they did not sell were also sent to the friends and family members with whom his wife wanted to get close to but at the same time did not want to spend money.
In the beginning, when they sent these sauces, the big bosses and the family elders laughed at him and his wife.
His wife too scolded him for being useless.
But it had been less than a week and those big bosses and the family elders kept asking him to bring more sauce jars, even his wife was getting frustrated and begged him to do anything to get his hands on the jars of sauce.
But how could he get his hands on the sauces? Who knew what went wrong but on the second day, the sauces that were hard to sell suddenly went out of stock.
And the same situation lingered on the third and fourth day.
Why was this happening? He asked one of the customers and that mer told him that they actually used up all the sauce that they bought from him. Even though the jars that they bought were enough to last for a month and if not at least three, they ended up finishing it all!
However, these customers were rich and noble. They did not know the meaning of thrifty. As soon as they realised how good of a thing the oyster and meat sauce was, they ended up eating more than a commoner would eat in a week in just a day.
Therefore, the sauces were licked clean in just a matter of days. Even when the prices rose to twelve silver taels a jar, no one was resistant to buying it.
This was because once they were done with eating sauces that they bought, the mers tried to skimp a little by buying another sauce from a small shop instead of the Yu mall. The result? No one wanted to eat a single bun.
The difference between the tastes of the two sauces was like heaven and earth. The sauce that they brought from another shop tasted like mud.
At first, the mers and their wives thought that it was their chefs who had failed in cooking a decent meal. So, they immediately fired the mer and women chefs for teasing them. But when they knew chefs were hired, they realised that they were not being teased!
After all, the problem persisted.
At first, the people who consumed the sauces thought that there was something wrong with their taste buds. After all, how could they think that the meals they were eating tasted like mud?
Thus, they all rushed to the medicinal halls or called the physicians to take a look at them. However, they were told that they were perfectly fine. This made them even more worried. If they were fine, then why could they not eat the meals without throwing up?
In the end, one of the physicians suggested that this was related more to their beliefs and the thoughts in their minds.
This made others roll their eyes. How could such a thing be possible?
However, soon one of the chefs brought up the matter that they have been ignoring.
The sauces.
One of the chefs who was on the verge of getting fired turned to look at his masters and said to them, “Masters, it’s not that I am lacking in my skills. It’s because of the sauce that you brought with you.”
“What did you say?” Master Peng blinked his eyes and then turned to look at his wife. He said to her, “Do you think it’s because of the sauce?” He looked quite puzzled. How could it be possible? Even if he was not buying vegetables and meat from the Bo and Bun mall, the difference shouldn’t be this high, right?
That was what the mer thought and so did his wife.
But the chef did not believe that there was no difference. He closed his eyes and sighed, “Master and Madam, I don’t know if you know this but I also work in other families. And one of those families cooks their meals with the meat and vegetables brought from the Bo and Bun mall.”
“I assure you that the taste and smell of their meals are really good,” he said, closing his eyes as if he were reminiscing about the scent of the meals that he had cooked at the house of that family. “I remember that even the oil that they use comes from the mill that sells the most refined oil of the city. Thus, their meals taste really good. I think that the reason you do not like eating these buns and pancakes is not because my cooking has gone bad but because the sauce that you were using with them has finished.”
With that, he sighed and stated, “I am afraid that if you do not purchase those sauces, even if you were to hire an imperial chef, the taste will remain the same. Unsatisfactory.”
“So, I think it’s better if you buy these sauces from the mall and if you cannot, then you can give me the money, and I can buy them for you.”
Master Peng pursed his lips as he turned to look at his wife in worry. They did not purchase this oil; this was given to them as a gift!
