Isekai Journey Of The Magic Archer
Chapter 1194 - 1194: The oath of office[OP: ]
They called it the oath of office for three reasons.
“When our predecessors established the student council, they had made it not for the headmaster or for the student bodies. The Student Council was made to resolve matters that the headmaster or the academy could not interfere with directly.”
These matters might include things that must be done confidentially– secretly going to the Laker, to the Kaksha, and such places to carry out the missions. The student council actually originated pretty late.
When the academy was established, there was no need for a student body that could act on behalf of the headmasters.
The headmasters back then used to be absolute beings. They were people that the entire world would listen to.
The positions that they held were literally backed by the divinities. There were few people in the world who could even speak before them.
The control that they had over the world was absolute. However, things changed when they were faced with moral and social dilemmas.
“With the passage of time, the world diversified. The power was decentralized and the students that had graduated from the academy became the driving force that changed the world over time.”
The world that they were seeing before them right now was the result of countless sacrifices, something that was built over centuries.
The headmasters of later generations neither had the support of the divine beasts that once supported the headmasters directly. They weren’t as blessed as the other headmasters either.
Headmaster Merlin, the current headmaster, was old and had been holding this position for a few centuries now, but even he wasn’t the oldest person to hold this position.
There were many before him as well. And if they had to say it out loud, the headmaster would never deny that those people were much stronger than he was right now.
Even though they were mortals, the gods and evil beings that wished to harm this world, even the demons of high rank trembled before those monsters.
They weren’t just blessed by the divine beasts, they possessed world authorities, they were blessed by so many divinities that the headmaster’s strength could not even be compared.
They held powers of beings that could create and destroy the world at their whims. Those people were completely different from what the people of today could ever imagine even in their wildest dreams.
However…
“The students that founded nations and guided humans all over the earth were blessed by various gods. Some ascended and gained the status of the divine themselves, while some carried the legacies of the late divinities who had finished their time in this world.”
Humans had not been around for that long. It had only been a few hundred thousand years since the first humans started walking the earth.
“This takes me to the second Genesis story famous around the world. As humans grew, they learned and they adapted to various aspects of this world.
They grew stronger and they obtained powers that they previously never possessed.”
The reason this planet was dominated by the humans instead of the Elves who were closer to nature, or the dwarves who possessed intelligence far beyond what the humans did, or the Giants who did not walk this earth anymore… was simply because of the adaptability of the humans.
While they weren’t the strongest, while they weren’t the smartest or possessed great affinities with anything, they were beings with the greatest potential.
“The headmasters of the past did not need any assistance to keep the world in check, however, the headmasters of recent centuries, the ones who came before me, all needed the help of people who were good at dealing with certain problems in certain manners.”
The headmasters always handpicked the members of the student council because the headmaster always knew what he lacked and what talents out there could help him.
He did not give any kind of job to just anyone. He prepared each and every student council member in his own manner.
By giving them unique resources that could further their growth, he helped them get stronger. By providing them with special instructors and mentors, he helped them understand their strengths, and by teaching them directly, the headmasters were able to find people they could employ after the academy.
“I’m not all-powerful nor am I all-knowing. I may be somewhat strong and smart, but I still could not be everywhere or do everything that needs to be done.”
The student council becomes the eyes and limbs of the headmaster, the ears and mouths of the teachers of the academy, the voices of the students of the academy, as well as the representatives of the great academy of hope in various scenarios.
They aren’t adventurers that go into dungeons, they aren’t diplomats that resolve matters with diplomacy, they aren’t soldiers that go to war nor are they assassins that kill for the sake of finishing a task.
They aren’t hired help. They do what they do knowing full well they might not get much out of it. They do it knowing they did not have to do any of it.
If someone did not want to be in the council, their memory was tampered with and they were sent to their merry way. It was a simple process where they communicate and resolve internal matters, as well as finish the missions given to them to the best of their abilities.
They do not do anything and everything they wish to do just to resolve some mission. They aren’t mercenaries. They are more than that, they are the heart of the academy that one must be thankful to.
“Among the people of this unique council, there are the heads who look after the others and guide them wherever they are needed.”
The presidents of the student council are the proxies of the headmaster as well as the vice headmaster.
If needed, they are given authority to move the entire student council as well as the working body under the headmaster to accomplish something.
There must be a justifiable cause behind what they are doing though, so as long as they could justify what they are doing and why they are doing it, the resources that they could use are simply beyond one’s understanding.
They could destroy kingdoms and kill monstrosities if needed with this authority bestowed upon them, however, they have to pay a price for this authority as well.
“Zod and Del have been great at what they do, so, I’m expecting more from you two.” The headmaster looked at Rein and Eon with a bright gaze.
He had just come back so these words reminded them all how they were not simply taking over an important position. They were taking over an important responsibility that they had the duty to justify within the three years that they would be holding it.
While the students that were present there would leave the academy in two years, they would have to wait here for one more year to choose who was going to take over them.
However, before they do that, they need to officially accept this position.
“You can start.” he nodded at the two of them and the two nodded at him with a smile.
They needed to take an oath. An oath that would not be taken in the presence of Mana or Aura. It would also not be an origin oath… or anything like that.
{ “I, Lucifer, as the student council president, selected by my seniors, President Zodiac and Cradle, swear to serve the office with the best of my skills, knowledge, and abilities.” }
It was a verbal promise made to the school, to the students, to the world, and to the headmaster.
They had to take their word for it… which was also not as simple as it sounded.
{ “I, Uriel, as the vice president of the student council, swear to help the president, the headmaster, my fellow students, my respectful teachers, as well as the ones in need with the best of what I have.” }
The oaths of office were important.
When the student council was first established, it was not for the sake of helping the headmasters keep the balance in the world.
The members of the student council were certainly not some special force of the headmaster that he was training. They were also students, just like the rest of the students.
The members of the student council simply had their unique objectives for which they were willing to go to great lengths.
The members were simply selfish. The ones who were leading them, especially, were people who moved for themselves more than they did for the academy, for the world, or the headmasters.
They surely were guided by them and did things under their observation and guidance, but they had their own objectives and they were given unique powers to accomplish those goals.
“May the office be your finest workplace.” These words were something each headmaster had said to the council heads right after their oaths– after the declarative statement of their selfish nature.
{ “Thank you, headmaster. Please continue guiding us in the future as well.” }
The oath meant a lot of things, most of which even the headmaster could not decipher. But that was one of their objectives as well… These oaths were more important than an oath that bound them with anything.
“Of course I will. After all, it is my duty as well.”
The smile that he gave them was simple and calm, but only the two of them could see the depth and his deeper intentions hidden behind them.
“I’m looking forward to working with you two, you know?”
The oaths that they had taken just now were a promise to themselves.
It was going to be their goal to achieve what they had actually sworn to accomplish under those spoken words.
{ “Likewise, headmaster.” }
Eon was excited to work With him as well.
{ “Of course, headmaster.” }
And, Rein was excited to Help him in every way he needed.
