Chapter 4749: Discovered
Hao’er didn’t know how he managed to witness the horrific scene unfold. All he knew was that after a while, several black-clad, masked cultivators emerged from the central area. They selected certain children from each small, dark room and led them away, including the boy who had briefly claimed the roast chicken and a few of those he had beaten.
Hao’er watched as they took the children. He took a deep breath, casting a cold glance forward. Just as he was about to follow the others back to their small, dark room, a voice stopped him.
“Wait a minute.”
The man who had been standing next to the pillar spoke. His gaze swept over the remaining children, finally landing on Hao’er. He pointed at him. “You, come out.”
Everyone’s gaze immediately followed the man’s finger to Hao’er. In the dim light, he was an unremarkable child, but unlike the others, he possessed a stillness, a calmness that children his age simply didn’t have.
How perceptive! Hao’er’s heart sank. He knew his barely suppressed anger and piercing gaze had given him away. He forced his emotions down and, under the scrutiny of every eye, walked to the front.
A cultivator quickly rushed forward and opened the iron door of their section.
Seeing this, Hao’er stepped out and approached the man, one careful step at a time.
The man stood with his hands clasped behind his back, slowly circling Hao’er, scrutinizing him carefully. The more he observed, the more surprised he became. He glanced at the calm, expressionless child, then looked at the black-robed men beside him. “Is this the newcomer?” he asked.
“Yes, sir…” The cultivator replied respectfully. But before he could finish speaking, a wind blade materialized and instantly severed one of his arms.
The arm flew through the air, blood splattering across the ground. After a moment of instinctive screaming, the black-robed man quickly stifled his cries and knelt down, trembling.
“Do you know why I cut off your arm?” the man said coldly, his hands still behind his back, his bloodthirsty gaze fixed on the kneeling cultivator. However, the corner of his eye subtly tracked Hao’er’s expression.
“I don’t know…” the dismembered cultivator stammered, his voice quivering, genuinely unaware of his transgression.
“You don’t know? Then I’ll tell you,” the man said icily. “Look up and look at this child. Does he show even the slightest bit of panic or fear? Does he look like an ordinary child?”
Hearing this, the black-robed cultivator looked up. He saw the child’s eyes, calm and cold, fixed on him. Even with one of his arms severed, the child didn’t so much as frown. In that moment, the cultivator’s heart sank as he finally realized the grave mistake he had made.
“Get out of here!” the man commanded, no longer bothering to look at him.
“Yes.” The black-robed man, clutching his severed arm, endured the excruciating pain and staggered away.
“Which family are you from?” The man then turned his full attention back to Hao’er.
Hao’er pursed his lips, remaining silent.
“Hehe, you won’t tell me? Don’t you want to go home? Tell me, and I can have someone send you back,” he coaxed, a low laugh rumbling in his chest.
Upon hearing this, Hao’er frowned. “Do you think I’m that stupid?” he retorted. He had seen enough of this place and witnessed their brutal methods. How could he possibly believe they would let him leave?
