Chapter 2206: Anger
Such occurrences were not uncommon in the world, often a means to safeguard one’s own security.
Thus, even upon encountering his brother in Huaixi province, Qi didn’t find it particularly odd.
However, he hadn’t anticipated the extent of his brother’s experiences.
It explained the unease he felt under Sun Pu’s scrutiny. Yet, Qi couldn’t shake off the suspicion that the continued tension stemmed from their failure to reach an agreement. Perhaps he was overthinking it.
“It seems not,” Qi retorted impulsively. “So, it was Sun Pu and the Sun family targeting me? Hmph, quite the ambitious lot! The Sun family’s reputation is rather mediocre.”
What more could be said about the 80,000-strong army that suffered a humiliating defeat in Huaixi province? If Qi were in their shoes, he’d be too mortified to show his face!
Unable to secure victory on the battlefield, they sought solace in redirecting their frustration onto others.
“In the end, I didn’t concede to anything. I simply informed them that General Feng would dispatch a representative for further negotiations. That’s what General Feng instructed me to convey upon my arrival. Furthermore, I paid 10,000 taels of silver before bringing my people over.”
“If I had known Sun Pu was such a despicable coward, I wouldn’t have spared him a single tael!” Qi exclaimed with disdain.
Shao Yunduan chuckled. “If you hadn’t paid, they wouldn’t have let you pass. But it’s a mere ten thousand taels, what harm does it do? I just hope General Deng sends someone to negotiate with us without further delay…”
Qi scratched his head sheepishly, chuckling. “I doubt there’ll be any hold-up. General Deng assured me he’s ready and urged me not to fret.”
Shao Yunduan nodded with a smile. “That’s reassuring! Get some rest; we’ll head to Anze Province together tomorrow. My parents, brother, sister-in-law, Taotao, and Zhao Shu are all there. I’ll bring Anan along, and we’ll finally be reunited!”
“Really? That’s fantastic!” Qi’s joy was palpable, his nostalgia evident. “I can’t wait to see Father and Mother!”
Shao Yunduan gave his brother’s shoulder a reassuring pat. “We’ll set out tomorrow morning!”
The brothers exchanged smiles.
Shao Xiaoqi was eager to meet his fifth sister-in-law and nephew, Anan. Since Qiao Xuan was already in Anze Province, Shao Yunduan arranged for someone to bring Anan there.
Qi sighed deeply. “Fifth Brother, Fifth Sister-in-law, you’ve done far too much for me! I’m indebted to you beyond measure—”
“What nonsense are you spouting? Your Fifth Sister-in-law wouldn’t mind in the least,” Shao Yunduan’s gaze softened.
He knew his daughter-in-law better than anyone. Not only would she not mind, but she’d also relish having something to occupy her time. Left to her own devices, she’d grow restless in the backyard, itching for some excitement.
Qi smiled gratefully. “You may say that, Fifth Brother, but I’m truly thankful! I’ll find a way to repay you both someday, even if it takes a lifetime!”
Shao Yunduan chuckled. “You’re becoming quite the smooth talker. You should convey your gratitude to your Fifth Sister-in-law!”
Qi’s smile widened.
Before long, Anan arrived.
He vaguely recalled Qi and greeted him with a smile as “Uncle Qi.” Initially reserved, he soon warmed up to Qi, laughing and playing with him and a few guards in the garden. Their joyful laughter echoed throughout the surroundings.
Shao Yunduan shook his head affectionately. Despite his claims of maturity, Qi was still as boisterous as ever!
