Chapter 1728: Chapter 1585: Dragon Race, a Source of Pride
At the northern end of New Moon Land, above the boundless snow and ice, several anxious figures followed the arc of the heavens, flying towards the region where the grassland met the icy earth.
Yu Bo and Yu Wind Flute led at the front, riding an aged Thunderous Giant Dragon.
The wounds on the Thunderous Giant Dragon’s body hadn’t even had time to be treated, but it was forcing its wings to flap vigorously as it flew towards Wanxiang City.
The injuries on the Thunderous Giant Dragon were grave. It exhaled heavily with every breath, clearly showing it was utterly exhausted.
Yu Bo gently stroked the dragon’s head, a certain glimmer in his eyes.
“Old friend, let’s stop here,” Yu Bo said to the Thunderous Giant Dragon.
The Thunderous Giant Dragon had accompanied Yu Bo for hundreds of years. Undying-level creatures were supposed to have far longer lifespans, but endless battles over the century had greatly drained both its body and soul, causing it to age at a rapid pace alongside its master.
The Thunderous Giant Dragon continued to flap its enormous wings. Perhaps it wished to prove its own strength and deny its aging, or perhaps, as it approached the twilight of its life, it simply wanted to savor one last flight, roaming freely through the skies…
Bathed in the fading light, the thunderous wings carried it resolutely forward in one determined direction.
Behind Yu Wind Flute’s Thunderous Giant Dragon flew others: Bai Yu, cloaked in Demon Flame; Liu Binglan, riding the Star River Bird; Ye Qingzi, perched atop the Little Hiding Dragon; and trailing closely behind Ye Qingzi were Zhan Ye and Martial Cloud Dragon.
Ye Qingzi cast a backward glance at Zhan Ye and Martial Cloud Dragon.
Chu Mu’s Little Huangquan Catastrophe was the strongest among them. At its speed, it could undoubtedly reach Wanxiang City the quickest.
However, the Huangquan Catastrophe was injured in its battle against the Emperor’s Deep Sea Demon Spirit and was now resting in the Heavenly Mountains. It had no chance of catching up.
Zhan Ye’s Courageous Sting’s Heart effects were dissipating after its battle as well, returning its strength to its original level. It, too, could not make it in time.
As for Chu Mu himself, he was still unconscious. Ye Qingzi continued doing her best to treat him, praying for his swift recovery.
“This is too slow. We’re all moving far too slowly,” Liu Binglan whispered as her gaze fixed on the distant Wanxiang City.
At this pace, by the time they arrived, Wanxiang City would already be reduced to ruins—a city ravaged by enemies holding high-level Undying strength, bolstered by an enormous army…
Furthermore, all of them were already injured in the prior battles. Even if they reached Wanxiang City, would their present strength be enough to halt the enemy forces?
“Aoooo!!!!!!!”
The Little Hiding Dragon let out a thunderous cry, flapping its wings with all its might, surging to the front of the group.
The Little Hiding Dragon was in relatively good condition; its flying speed was also quick. Its intent was clear—it wanted to reach Wanxiang City ahead of everyone else.
“Qingzi, why does the Little Hiding Dragon’s body emit blue light?” Bai Yu immediately asked.
Lowering her eyes, Ye Qingzi noticed the peculiar glows emanating from the dragon. It resembled the light of an evolution but felt dimmer somehow.
“The Little Hiding Dragon can evolve by devouring souls—it seems it’s about to advance,” Ye Qingzi explained.
The appearance of this glow meant the creature was approaching a breakthrough, teetering on the edge of breaking its bottleneck, ready to transcend at any moment!
During the prior battles, the Little Hiding Dragon had devoured a total of ten Undying-level souls. It only needed to consume one more Intermediate Undying soul to advance. Yet, with the entire city swallowed by a black hole, no enemies were left for it to devour.
“Wait.” Suddenly, Yu Bo called out to the Little Hiding Dragon rushing ahead.
Ye Qingzi hesitated, slowing the dragon down, puzzled by Yu Bo’s lagging pace.
“Is it only one soul short of advancement?” Yu Bo’s eyes never wavered from Chu Mu’s Little Hiding Dragon.
Ye Qingzi nodded quietly. “It needs just one Intermediate Undying soul.”
“Take mine,” Yu Bo replied.
Ye Qingzi did not immediately grasp his intent.
“Take its soul,” Yu Bo clarified gently.
Ye Qingzi froze in place, her gaze landing on the Thunderous Giant Dragon Yu Bo rode.
Take the Thunderous Giant Dragon’s soul?
Yu Bo intended to offer his own Thunderous Giant Dragon’s soul for the Little Hiding Dragon to devour. But doing so would mean taking its life.
“No, that’s unthinkable! It’s your Soul Pet!” Ye Qingzi protested.
“Yu Bo, we’ll make it there,” Liu Binglan rushed to interject.
“Yes, the Thunderous Giant Dragon still has plenty of life left—we can treat it with Life Fruits to prolong its lifespan…” Ye Qingzi pleaded.
This was a Soul Pet that had accompanied Yu Bo for hundreds of years—a bond deeper than family ties. Sacrificing its life was nothing short of cruel.
Ye Qingzi knew she couldn’t do it, and she was certain Chu Mu wouldn’t allow his Little Hiding Dragon to consume the soul of an ally—not like this.
All present vehemently opposed Yu Bo’s decision, but Yu Bo simply shook his head. Stroking the Thunderous Giant Dragon’s horn, he said, “This is its desire.”
The dragon’s desire?
Could it possibly want to offer its soul to the Little Hiding Dragon?
Everyone stared in bewilderment at the purple dragon Yu Bo rode.
The Thunderous Giant Dragon’s breathing had become extremely labored. Its weary frame sagged, its clouded eyes sunken, soft wrinkles surrounding them as it gazed deeply at the Little Hiding Dragon, an elder offering a final, heartfelt gift to its successor.
“Dragons do not allow themselves to die of old age—it’s the ultimate form of weakness. It knows its condition. Even if the Little Hiding Dragon doesn’t consume its soul, it will soon leave me, flying alone into the skies, soaring towards the Second Layer of Heaven, the Third Layer of Heaven, until its strength wanes, its body stiffens, and the gales at high altitudes tear it into dust…” Yu Bo stated calmly.
Though he spoke with composure, Yu Bo could not deny the truth—both he and his Soul Pet had grown old.
Yet, to witness such a pivotal battle in their twilight years, Yu Bo harbored no regrets. This sentiment mirrored the Cloud Gate Old Man’s yearning to die in combat.
At this age, life and death no longer wielded the same weight.
His Thunderous Giant Dragon felt the same. It knew its time was near, but facing death meant one final challenge against the highest heavens—such was the pride of dragon-kind.
However, if, before its death, it could contribute to its kin, the Thunderous Giant Dragon would much rather help a young and powerful Hiding Dragon ascend, trusting it would soar higher and farther than it ever could.
Yu Bo waved his hand dismissively, signaling for everyone to stop trying to dissuade him. “It also cherishes the New Moon Land—a sky burial in Wanxiang City would be its preferred choice. If this city is destroyed, it will no longer have a serene place to rest in death. There’s no time to waste. The Little Hiding Dragon must reach Wanxiang City before all of us.”
“It has experienced the Dragon Race Wars and witnessed the agony of losing an entire homeland. Wanxiang City cannot fall. If it does, all we’ve fought for will be in vain. No matter how many enemies we trample underfoot, we cannot recover what’s lost,” Yu Bo said gravely as his eyes locked onto Ye Qingzi and the Little Hiding Dragon.
Liu Binglan, Ye Qingzi, and Bai Yu all fell silent.
At this moment, none of them could find words to respond to Yu Bo.
He was merely an old man in retirement, hoping to spend his twilight years peacefully in New Moon Land. Yet now, he regarded himself as a member of the New Moon, risking everything for its preservation…
Ye Qingzi couldn’t make this decision; she could only watch Yu Bo and his Thunderous Giant Dragon, her heart heavy.
The others couldn’t decide for the Little Hiding Dragon either; they could only remain silent.
“Little Hiding Dragon.” Suddenly, a weak voice broke the silence.
“Ssssssshhhhh~~~~~~~~”
The Little Hiding Dragon immediately turned, its eyes fixed on its rider, who was supposed to be unconscious—Chu Mu had awoken!
“Chu Mu.”
“Chu Mu!!”
The three of them lit up with joy upon seeing Chu Mu regain consciousness.
Ye Qingzi quickly supported Chu Mu, wiping tears that had welled up from Yu Bo’s heartfelt words.
In this war, Ye Qingzi couldn’t even recall how many times she’d cried—far more than ever before. The same likely held true for everyone…
“I haven’t regained my strength yet; I can’t fight,” Chu Mu said, clutching his aching chest.
“We know…” Yu Bo replied.
“Little Hiding Dragon, devour its soul.” From the moment Chu Mu awoke, he had heard Yu Bo’s earlier words.
Yu Bo was right—Wanxiang City could not fall. If it did, all their efforts and sacrifices to defend it would be meaningless. Killing countless enemies would be pointless.
The Dark King Shang only protected Chu Mu because of a Soul Contract-like bond between them. Sending it to Wanxiang City would result in indiscriminate destruction, tearing apart both allies and foes alike.
The only one who could save Wanxiang City now was the Little Hiding Dragon, which needed just one Intermediate Undying soul to advance to High-level Undying.
Yu Bo nodded at Chu Mu’s decision. Chu Mu had made the correct choice—this wasn’t a moment for hesitation.
“Do you remember how your mother faced her own aging?” Chu Mu asked the Little Hiding Dragon.
“Ssssssshhhhh~~~~~~” The Little Hiding Dragon nodded vigorously.
The Azure Sky Hidden Dragon’s sky burial—a moment that the Little Hiding Dragon would never forget, scattering its majestic form across the vast heavens.
“Don’t be sad. It’s the pride of dragons; it’s the same for this one.” Chu Mu pointed to the equally aged Thunderous Giant Dragon.
The Little Hiding Dragon nodded again, then flapped its wings and flew towards the Thunderous Giant Dragon, its jaws clamping tightly onto its neck.
The Thunderous Giant Dragon showed no signs of resistance.
Ye Qingzi closed her eyes. Liu Binglan closed hers. Bai Yu turned away.
Only Chu Mu and Yu Bo watched the scene unfold in silence.
But Chu Mu noticed the flicker in Yu Bo’s eyes…
No matter how resolved one appears, the bond is hard to sever. It was the gaze of an old Soul Pet Master watching his lifelong companion depart—a sight Chu Mu would never forget.
