Despite their carefulness, the guardian tower was still beyond their expectations.
It still has more mechanisms up its sleeves.
First, it has a countermeasure if the first beam was dodged, another beam would be fired from the target’s blind spot. Second, it could also fire multiple beams at the same time, which would eliminate all options to dodge, a killer move that should guarantee a kill.
Two more layers of protection to eliminate intruders.
Such mechanisms would guarantee to kill anyone at the first try to pass through it.
It was too hard to go through on the first try.
Perhaps, if given more chances, others could successfully go through this obstacle.
But Rex did it the first time.
More importantly, he made it look easy, as if anybody could do it.
Everyone has their jaws on the floor, they couldn’t believe that Rex got through that easily.
Even the Pale Howlers, all of them, turned docile with a glare from him.
Boasting gnarly forms that were a mixture of a dog and a hyena, sharp crystal spines that burst from their backs, thicker muscles that were barely covered by their white furs, sharp fangs, a long spiky tail, and also blazing red eyes—the Pale Howlers were no pushovers.
But Rex treated them like domesticated dogs, scaring them into being docile.
All of them shuddered at his presence.
No matter the realm, canines could always sense my Werewolf side.
As long as I’m stronger, they would fear me.
Rex signaled for these Pale Howlers to go back into the tower, which they surprisingly obeyed, before he walked over to behind the tower. From the structure of the tower, he could tell that its effect was only pointing outward.
Once he got through the entrance, he should be safe from it.
A moment later, a loud, rusted mechanical sound echoed as the tower’s gem visibly dimmed.
Then, Rex appeared again and gave a thumbs up.
“It’s safe now, come on.” He said, gesturing for them to come.
Upon seeing this, all of them, without exception, were stunned.
None of them moved from their spots.
Linthia was the first one to move, guiding her horse to trot towards the entrance.
For a moment, only the sound of horse hooves, clacking against the ground, could be heard.
As Linthia was about to walk past the knife mark, everyone unconsciously held their breaths, fearing that the tower would fire a beam and vaporize her into dust. But none of the sort happened—the others watched as she safely crossed the range and reached the entrance.
It was only then that Crimoria snapped out of her trance.
Rex actually did it.
“Move it, men!” Her voice rang loudly. “What are you waiting for?!”
Just then, the army finally moved and headed for the entrance.
Despite feeling surreal that Rex was able to deactivate the tower as easily as that, he really did it.
Rex stayed beside the entrance, watching the Pale Howlers, making sure that none of them tried to make a move against the army. Crimoria walked past him, but she stopped a couple of steps away and turned around to approach him.
“Hey,” She called, covering her face a little. “Can you forget that I doubted you?”
“Huh? What do you mean?” Rex raised an eyebrow, confused.
“It’s just that, you know…” Crimoria stuttered, stumbling over words. “I felt dumb for worrying.”
“Yeah, sure.” Rex nodded, chuckling a little.
Once he said that, Crimoria bowed slightly and continued ahead, feeling a lot better.
Then, Rex noticed Viora, who was avoiding eye contact.
“I have quite a sharp hearing, you know. I heard what you said. About re-thinking this?” Rex teased.
“Don’t…” Viora raised her hand—she was embarrassed. “Don’t say another word about it.”
Rex had a good laugh from their reactions.
He also expected the tower to be harder to go through, more chaotic, but it wasn’t. In fact, the tower was easier than anticipated. Rex didn’t even need to rely on the Mask of the Banished Eclipse that much, his senses were more than enough.
And deactivating the tower was quite easy to do from the inside.
It wasn’t all that complicated, there was a hidden lever behind the tower that was its power button.
Since it was easy to control, this tower was certainly made by Grant’s ancestors—and is a part of the ruin. Protective towers and a main tower—that could host thousands upon thousands of people. I think this tower is a shelter of some kind.
Regardless, the first obstacle was now cleared.
Next is clearing the tower itself and finding out what was causing the dark tide.
However, there was one thing that slightly worried Rex.
<Notice: the guardian tower is damaged, causing a slight malfunction in its defensive mechanism.>
For a shelter, it should be time-resistant. It shouldn’t break down easily.
Did the Voidal Monsters tamper with it or was it accidental?
Shaking his head, Rex finally turned around to follow the others after the last of them got in.
<The user has entered the Singing Lady’s lair, the Forsaken Tower.>
As soon as Rex and the others entered the first floor of the Forsaken Tower, the Voidal Monsters there instantly lunged at him. Surprisingly enough, none of them were sleeping or idling, they were all awake and alert, almost as if they were waiting for them to come inside.
Naturally, it was an all-out battle from the start.
Seeing how Rex was able to clear the first obstacle easily, the army decided to step up.
All of them vigorously went into formation and cleared out the Voidal Monsters without needing Rex’s aid at all. Even the heirs, who were at the very back earlier, decided to go to the frontline—and take out as many Voidal Monsters as they could.
Some monsters emerged from the ground, some descended from the ceiling, and some were invisible.
Despite their expected weakness, their diversity and numbers made it quite a fierce fight.
It took a full hour of non-stop fighting for the army to clear the first five floors.
And surprisingly, none of them died in the process.
Considering that most soldiers Crimoria brought were Immortal Spirits, this wasn’t surprising.
Rex was watching initially, respecting their desire to show him that they also could be effective if they wanted to, but he couldn’t help but join the battle on the fifth floor. Some of the Voidal Monsters on this floor were at the Ascendant Spirit rank, which was a wonderful farming field of Nightfall Stars.
Once he killed the last nearby Voidal Monster on the fifth floor, he scanned the area.
As the tower’s structure entailed, Rex and the others were now within a spherical chamber.
It was an open space, capable of sheltering thousands.
Etched into the ground were dark, damp markings—each roughly the width of a person’s shoulders that were arranged in a circular formation spanning thirty to fifty concentric rows. At the very center lay a small, unassuming spot where, strangely, the air felt lighter.
Almost weightless compared to the rest of the chamber.
Sensing the lightness of the air there, Taylan walked over to it and yelped in surprise.
“Woah! What is this?”
As soon as Taylan stepped into that particular spot, he began to float.
Not that high, around three to four meters, and suspended there as if he were an ornament.
“Get down from there!” Hannah exclaimed—cursing her older brother’s stupidity in her mind. “What if you activated something you should’ve had?!”
“Ah, I didn’t really think that far…” Taylan smiled acutely and leaped down.
Fortunately, he could get out, and nothing seemed to be activated.
Averting her gaze from the heirs, Viora turned towards Rex, who was now focused on the markings on the floor. She approached him and explained her own analysis, “I initially thought this tower was a shelter, but the concentration of life energy in here was a lot higher than normal, so that shouldn’t be the case.”
“If this were really a shelter, it would suppress life energy instead of flourishing it.” She added.
Of course, Rex agreed with this.
A high concentration of life energy meant other spirits or Voidal Monsters could sense it—which defeats the purpose of a shelter. “Other than a shelter, this could be either a control room to activate something in the ruin or a defensive layer for the ruin.” Viora continued.
“But these markings…” Rex muttered, wiping the dust away.
Studying the marking for a moment, he turned around and tried to sit on it.
And surprisingly enough, the marking fits him almost perfectly.
It’s clear now that these markings are seats.
“Whatever this place was, it could host a lot of people,” Rex added.
Since there are hundreds of these markings, all facing the center, on every floor, the place was meant—for a lot of people. Then, as the two were discussing, Crimoria approached with something in her hand, “Look, the others found a lot of these scattered on the floor.”
Rex took it—the item looked like an ancient pendant.
Once he scanned it with the System, he found that it was another key or a seal of some sort.
But then, a notification caught his attention.
<Notice: A fragment of Time Echo has taken effect on the user!>
Rex frowned when he read this, and frankly, he panicked for that second.
System, how did it affect me?! It doesn’t change the fact that I still have time for Nivellen, right?!
<Timed moved faster in the tower, but it won’t affect the outside.>
Only then could Rex breathe a sigh of relief—that notification spooked him.
Right, if it’s inside the tower, it shouldn’t affect the outside.
Rex massaged his forehead for a second before he turned to Viora.
“Can an Echo be split into multiple fragments?” He asked.
“Yes, it can,” Viora nodded.
“Powerful Echoes are usually split into fragments by a powerful Seeker to reduce the potency of their power—and make it easier to control,” Crimoria added, knowing full well that Rex was still new to all of this for some reason. “So, it is possible.”
“There’s a fragment of Time Echo here,” Rex stated as he stood up.
Upon hearing this, Viora and Crimoria sucked in a cold breath.
“What?! The Time Echo?!” Crimoria exclaimed, not expecting such a powerful Echo to be here. “The Time Echo came from the 10 Throne of Laws, it’s one of the most powerful Echoes, how could it end up here?”
“Better yet, what is it for?” Viora added with a troubled tone.
“To be exact,” Rex held up the item and looked at them. “It’s in this thing or maybe only traces of it.”
Both Viora and Crimoria looked at the item with a newfound light.
It seemed the tower was more mysterious than they initially thought.
“Regardless, we should get to the upper floors. More clues there, I bet,” Crimoria stated.
Rex nodded and looked up at the ceiling.
Unlike the lower floors, which could be accessed through a staircase, there were no staircases leading to the upper floors. Currently, the soldiers were sweeping the entire chamber, searching for a way to access the upper floors.
Then, he noticed that the ceiling was a gate.
From the linings, it definitely could open like a celestial iris, which would lead them to the upper floors.
“This thing is the seal to open that gate above us,” Rex said and pointed at the ceiling. “All we need to find is where to put it. But since all three raids are successful in reaching the upper floors, it shouldn’t be that hard to find.”
Viora and Crimoria looked up and were surprised to realize that the entire ceiling was the gate.
Once it was opened, they could probably see the entire upper floors from down here.
Just as Rex said that, he could hear the voice of a distant soldier.
“I found something!” He announced.
Rex smiled lightly and instantly headed towards the soldier.
As expected—the soldier found an array with a circle at the center—which seemed to be the perfect fit for the seal in his hand. Nodding his head, Rex turned to the soldiers and shouted, “Get in formation! Be ready to fight!!”
Upon hearing this, the soldiers instantly went into formation.
Some of them who have defense-type Soul Artifacts instantly used their Soul Artifacts, ranging in shapes, and protected themselves and those close to them from a potential attack from above. Crimoria, Viora, as well as the heirs, were on the sides, also preparing for an attack from above.
Once all of them got into formation, Rex nodded his head and placed the seal onto the array.
Swish!
Instantly, the array glowed—followed by the loud, grating sound coming from the ceiling.
As expected, the ceiling was slowly opened.
However, at that exact moment, Rex’s eyes dilated as a gush of energy descended upon them hard.
