Chapter 2018: Slander

He is just an arrogant young man. Are his medical skills and talent better than mine? No way!

Mei Shuhai would never admit it even to his death.

Just as the standoff reached a stalemate, a breathless voice called out from nearby, “What’s going on here, Doctor Mei? Why did you bring people from the Enforcement Hall to arrest Xi Yue? What did he do wrong?”

It was Wen Jiaquan, rushing over with sweat streaming down his face. Following closely behind him were Elder Yu and several other instructors.

Running alongside him was Mi Xuan. When she saw Wang Hai and the others trying to arrest Xi Yue earlier, she sensed something was wrong and quickly went to find Wen Jiaquan.

Since Wen Jiaquan had been in the middle of a discussion with Elder Yu and the others, they all came along with him.

Mei Shuhai turned to Wen Jiaquan with a face full of anger and said coldly, “I received a report that Meng Zisu from Class Three of the Water Medicine Department has an inappropriate relationship with her instructor, Xi Yue. Someone even claimed to have seen her spend the night at his residence last night.”

As he spoke, he looked toward Elder Yu. “I had Elder Yu’s approval for this, and the Inner Sect issued an official notice. Otherwise, how do you think I managed to get the Enforcement Hall involved?”

Wen Jiaquan was stunned and quickly turned to Elder Yu. “What’s going on, Elder Yu? Ever since Xi Yue became an instructor, he’s been diligent and responsible. You assigned him the most difficult class—Class Three of the Water Medicine Department—and he’s handled it well. Why would you have the Enforcement Hall take him away? Do you believe he would do something inappropriate with a student?”

Elder Yu cleared his throat, glanced at Xi Yue, and said, “At first, I didn’t believe the rumors either. But last night, Elder Liang saw with his own eyes that Meng Zisu entered Xi Yue’s room in the middle of the night and never came out. A young man and woman, alone behind closed doors for hours, in the dead of night—Doctor Wen, can you honestly say nothing happened between them?”

Meng Zisu shouted angrily, “I did not! I only went to see Instructor Xi Yue. I was in his room for no more than 15 minutes. How could anything inappropriate have happened? Don’t you dare throw false accusations at us!”

Elder Yu looked at Elder Liang next to him.

Elder Liang snorted and said, “What matter is so urgent that you had to seek out your instructor in the middle of the night? Don’t you know that a young man and woman alone at such an hour is bound to raise suspicion? What’s more, not long after you went in, the light in Xi Yue’s room went out. And as far as I saw, you never came back out.”

As soon as Elder Liang said that, the surrounding murmurs grew even louder.

Everyone pointed at Meng Zisu and Xi Yue, their faces full of shock and contempt.

An inappropriate relationship between teacher and student is treated as a crime on par with rape in Siam. Not just in the Heavenly Medical Valley—even anywhere else, such conduct would be condemned by all and punished with the harshest of penalties.

Xi Yue cast a cold and piercing gaze at Elder Liang and Elder Yu. Deep down, he couldn’t help but let out a silent, mocking laugh.

When Xi Yue agreed to teach in the outer sect of the Heavenly Medical Valley and take on Class Three of the Water Medicine Department, the condition was 12 Soul Essence Fruits per year, with 6 to be paid upfront. But he still hadn’t received them. Now, it seemed clear—some people were planning to go back on the deal.

She said calmly, “So based on Elder Liang’s vague testimony and a few rumors, you’re going to send me to the Enforcement Hall? Is that all the justice the Heavenly Medical Valley stands for? Or is it simply that Elder Yu has no intention of honoring his promise to give me those 6 Soul Essence Fruits?”

Elder Yu’s face instantly darkened at her words, and Elder Liang snapped, “What are you implying? Are you accusing me of slander?”
